Mindful Psychotherapy - developing the art of living in the here and now

Tanya T. Wiser, LCSW #17621

I feel tremendous gratitude for the healing power of mindfulness.   It is a powerful process that provides clarity of mind and heart.  Through mindfulness practices it becomes possible to nurture a connection with our inner wisdom.  It is by paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment with an attitude of kindness and acceptance that healing occurs.

I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest where I attended undergraduate school at The Evergreen State College in Washington State.  TESC is an institution that approaches learning, and life, in a holistic & experiential way.  After graduating with a B.A. in liberal arts, I traveled to the Bay Area where I continued my long career in the healing arts.    In 1992, I graduated from San Francisco State University's Master of Social Work program where, once again, I was trained to look at each life in a holistic manner.

I continued to live in San Francisco until 1998, shortly after my first child was born, when I moved to the Bay Area Peninsula, 20 miles South of the city.  In 2004 a back injury motivated me to try Pilates and by 2007 I was a certified Pilates Instructor.  I utilize my training in Pilates as a way to integrate and support a body-mind connection.

Over the years I have trained and worked with the full lifespan and with people in all walks and phases of life from pregnant teens and the homeless mentally ill to physicians and lawyers.  In 2006 I published and co-authored a curriculum for boys, The Council, designed to support boys social and emotional development (I was deeply inspired to help boys when I found a wealth of similar resources for girls but nothing for young men).   I have specialized in working with addictive behaviors, depression, gender/sexual identity, anxiety, parenting struggles, negative thinking, and overwhelming emotions such as grief and loss.  I have devoted myself to the intensive study of mindfulness practices and I actively incorporate these practices into both my personal and my professional life.

I am a member of the Society for Clinical Mindfulness, I have trained with Zindel Seigal, PhD in MBCT (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy), Sarah Bowen, PhD in MBRP (Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention) and I have attended many mindfulness and psychotherapy trainings & retreats with Jack Kornfield, PhD and other gifted teachers through Spirit Rock.

The gift of mindfulness has touched and inspired me deeply,
I hope it will do the same for you.
